With its established air, rail, road and ship transit system, Newark serves as a major gateway into the northeastern United States and the NY metropolitan area. In 1928, Newark Airport was opened as NYC area's first commercial airport and today it is the 2nd busiest airport in the NY region.  The city holds over 350 miles of roadways, jointly maintained by the municipality, the New Jersey Department of Transportation, Essex County, and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority.

Travel to Newark by Air

Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) serves the city of Newark and the New York region. EWR is owned by City of Newark and operated by Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The airport serves as one of the largest hubs for United Airlines, FedEx Express and Kalitta Air. It serves 50 carriers that connect to top domestic and international destinations. In terms of flights, EWR is the busiest in the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area.

Ground Transportation to and from the Airport

AirTrain Newark: AirTrain is a convenient means to get to, from, and around Newark Liberty International Airport. It operates all through out the year, 24 hours a day and provides easy access to New Jersey Transit, Northeast Corridor rail lines and North Jersey Coast Line. Also it serves as a great way to connect to and from Manhattan and points north, or Philadelphia and points south. AirTrain will also take you to airline terminals, hotel shuttles, rental car facilities and central parking lots without having to worry about traffic.

Newark Airport Express Bus:
Newark Airport Express offers efficient express bus service between the Airport and New York City. The cost is about $16 one way or $28 round trip. During the day its arrives at each stop every 15 minutes. Between  6:45 AM and 11:15 PM, it departs every 30 minutes. Click Here for more information.

Public Transportation in Newark

Train Services: Newark's major train station is Newark Penn Station that is located in east of downtown. The Penn station is served by 3 New Jersey Transit commuter rail lines, the interurban PATH train and Amtrak service. The city has another train station, Newark Broad Street Station that operates two NJT commuter rail lines. The Penn Station and Newark Broad Street Station are linked by the Newark Light Rail system. The city has a third train station is at Newark Liberty International Airport, which links the airport to Northeast Corridor via AirTrain Newark.

Newark Light Rail: It consists of two segments that serve Newark and the surrounding area. The segments include the original Newark City Subway and the Broad Street station extension lines.

PHAT: It connects Newark to Jersey City and Manhattan.

The express bus route is Bus route 308 that links from Newark Penn Station to Six Flags Great Adventure. 319 is also an express service that connects to Atlantic City. Roadways and Highways in Newark

The numerous highways that serve Newark include the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95),Interstate 78, Interstate 280, the Garden State Parkway, U.S. Route 22, U.S. Route 1/9 and Route 21. It is the world's 15th busiest port and the largest container facility on the East Coast of the US.
