History of Newark

In 1666, Newark was founded by  Connecticut Puritans. In the 19th and 20th century, Newark witnessed major  industrial and population growth. Relate 20th and early 21st centuries after the racial tension and urban decline in the late 20s. The city was initially included in NJ's 104 townships under the New Jersey Legislature's Township Act in 1798. Later on April 11, 1836, Newark was reincorporated as a city of New Jersey. The opening of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in 1997 in the downtown area was regarded as a major platform  that triggers the city's revival efforts and had brought in many people to the city.

Geographically, Newark is garbed by Newark Bay and the Passaic River to the east, residential suburbs towards the west,  a mix of industrial areas and mid class residential suburbs to the north and the south and southwest is flocked by dense urban areas. If you want to explore the city's original history, head to the Central Ward, which was originally known as the old Third Ward. The Ward contains with Lincoln Park, the James St Commons Historic Districts, Military Park, University Heights, Government Center, The Coast, Springfield/Belmont and Seventh Ave Neighborhoods. People and Culture of Newark

Newark is home to several ethnic groups. It is the largest and 2nd most racially diverse city in New Jersey. The place of habitation of the different groups of people are scattered into five political wards. Upon arriving the Ironbound districts you will notice a blend of immigrant population and the neighborhood is adorned with dining, shopping and nightlife spots. It has been fondly coined as "Little Brazil" and "Little Portugal" due to its large Brazilian and  Portuguese population. The city's estimated racial makeup is 52.35% Black or African American, 26.31% White, 1.62% (4,485) Asian, 0.61% Native American and other races. Newark boasts of the magnificent New Jersey Performing Arts Center, that is the 6th largest performing arts center in US and is home of the New Jersey State Opera and New Jersey Symphony Orchestra.
